“This is a barrel selection focused on the darker fruit character the team at Howell Mountain Vineyards prefers from the old vines at Beatty Ranch. It’s the most intense and powerful of the three wines from the vineyard that we tasted for this issue, perfumed with rose scents, the sweet fruit bathed in volcanic tannins that feel like crushed rock. As a young wine, it’s concentrated and aggressively fruity: the floral notes retreat into waxiness, the candied fruit meeting charcoal bitterness in the tannins. An ambitious wine, recessed for now, this will likely need ten years to emerge from its tannins.” —J.G.
